The village of Murzitsy to Host the Ritual Celebration "Farewell to Horse"

13 June, 2014

The village of Murzitsy in Sechenovsk district is one of the few places in Nizhny Novgorod region where unusual ancient holiday has retained its ritual forms.

The locals take the ritual not only as a theatrical performance, by carrying it out they respect the memory of ancestors, whose lives were going in strict conformity with cycles of nature.

The ritual "Farewell to Horse" or "Bathing a Horse" is held at the end of Trinity week and marks the beginning of summer haying as well as other summer agricultural works.

In one of the houses in the village a "horse" is getting equipped: on a wooden base to which a horse head with lush mane is attached a large hood is put. Two men stand under it and the “horse” gets its natural shapes.

That creation, accompanied by a large audience, strolls through the village heading to the river Sura.

The "horse" may go into any courtyard where owners shall treat it with something.

Due to frequent visits and treats the "horse" becomes more and more merry, stamps his hoofs, prances, dances, showing pleasure from what is happening. The people around are not sad neither, they become participants of the action.

The holiday for the "horse" ends in the river where the ritual of "bathing" takes place. For all others the fun goes on.

The date and time of the holiday beginning: 14.06.2014 at 18:00.
